Bacchus Marsh Racecourse and Recreation Reserve

State-of-the-art facilities to support the diverse sport and recreation activities of local clubs and Moorabool Shire community. 

The Bacchus Marsh Racecourse and Recreation Reserve is ideally located to establish an active sports precinct to cater for the growth and future active sports requirements of the town. The Bacchus Marsh Racecourse and Recreation Reserve is located in Maddingley, a suburb of the Bacchus Marsh township, located approximately 45km from Melbourne’s CBD. 

The project will be delivered over three stages.

  • Stage 1 comprises of a multi-purpose pavilion and playing field, BMX track, relocation of existing equine facilities, site services, access roads, car parks, pedestrian paths and landscaping.
  • Stage 2 comprises of AFL, cricket and soccer playing fields, new netball and tennis courts, an all-abilities playground, two pavilions and associated car parking.
  • Stage 3 will see the development of a community oval, community pavilion and gravel overflow parking.

Stage 1

Stage 1 of the Bacchus Marsh Racecourse and Recreation Reserve was completed in early 2021: 

  • bulk earthworks
  • a new BMX track
  • a new multipurpose oval/field (not yet ready for use)
  • a new equestrian cross-country course
  • the establishment of dressage arenas
  • a new sports pavilion
  • a new cricket practice nets (not yet ready for use)
  • a new playground (not yet ready for use)
  • civil works and site services including:
  1. Reticulated water supply (1000m)
  2. Reticulated sewer mains connected to Rutherford Court (1000m)
  3. Site drainage works
  4. Electrical substation, upgrades and reticulation to site
  5. Car park lighting
  6. Sports lighting to the oval (100 lux)
  7. Equestrian sand arena and joint equestrian/camp draft sand arena

Stage 2

Works are underway at Bacchus Marsh Racecourse and Recreational Reserve.

In 2020 a design team was engaged to review the concept works for Stages 2 and 3 and to provide architectural and design services.

The Stage 2 scope includes new senior fields of play for AFL, Cricket and Soccer, new netball and tennis courts, all Abilities playground, two Pavilions and associated car parking. Stage 2  is being delivered over five sub-stages.

Stage 2A:
  • WSUD, storm water harvesting and reuse
  • Site services including drainage, sewer, water, electricity and lighting
  • Internal roadways, car parks and pathways including shared zones and traffic calming 
  • 2 netball courts and 2 tennis courts 
  • Sports lighting to soccer pitches, ovals and courts
  • Intersections with Bacchus Marsh-Balliang Road
Stage 2B:
  • Multipurpose oval for soccer pitches and a cricket field;
  • Multipurpose oval for AFL and cricket;
Stage 2C:
  • All-abilities playground
Stage 2D:
  • Multipurpose Sporting Pavilion
Stage 2E:
  • Signage and wayfinding
  • Landscaping

Stage 2 Timeframes

  • Stage 2A: Construction has commenced, expected completion date November 2022
  • Intersection with Bacchus Marsh-Balliang Road is expected to be completed by February 2023
  • Stage 2B: Construction has commenced, expected completion date November 2022
  • Anticipated completion date for ovals is March/April 2023 for monitored use, weather permitting and dependent upon turf establishment
  • Stage 2C: The project is in the design stage. Construction is expected to be completed by June 2023
  • Stage 2D: The project is in the design stage. Construction subject to funding

Stage 2 Budget and Funding

  • Community Sport Infrastructure Stimulus Program: $ 3,500,000
  • World Game Facilities Fund: $ 500,000
  • Council contribution over multiple years: $ 7,490,000

Construction Update - June 2022

The following construction activities have commenced:

FAQs

How much will the project cost?

Stage one of the project will cost approximately $9.1 million. Council is advocating for funding to deliver the remaining project stages. 

Has the community been consulted on this project?

Yes, Council met with user groups to share the draft Master Plan, and their feedback was taken into consideration by the project team. Key points from each user group are outlined in the Master Plan under the ‘Existing Users’ section.

During the detailed design process, the project team has sought and incorporated user group feedback where possible. 

How long will the project take to deliver?

Stage 1 of the project was completed in early 2021. Stage 2A is due to be completed by February 2023, Stage 2B is due to be completed by March/April 2023 and Stage 2C is expected to be completed by June 2023.  The timing of the other project stages is subject to future funding.

Is it still possible to access the reserve?

Access to the reserve is not restricted however, construction works for stage 2 facilities are still in progress. To avoid disappointment, we encourage you to check the works notifications for any upcoming restrictions.

An alternative access point to the reserve has been created on Bacchus Marsh-Balliang Road (opposite Rutherford Court).  This provides access to the northern section of the reserve, campdrafting and Pony Club facilities.

Are all construction works on the reserve being overseeing by Council? 

The Harness Club track extension was completed in January 2020 and was funded by Council and Harness Racing Victoria with project management completed by Harness Racing Victoria. For all enquiries regarding the Harness Club, please contact them directly.
