Wallace
Located on the outskirts of Ballarat, Wallace originated as a Cobb and Co stop between Melbourne and Ballarat.
Quickly becoming a popular settlement site for farmers in the mid-1800s, Wallace developed a strong dairy industry. The local butter factory ceased operation during the 1990s however the building is heritage listed and remains to this day. Visitors can stop by for a look at this well-maintained building. History buffs may wish to stay in the renovated former general store that was built in the mid-1800s. As well as being a general store, the bed and breakfast was at one time the local post office, the bank, and a meeting place for locals after church on Sundays.
Wallace is also home to a large organic walnut farm as well as a deer farm. Fly fishing is on offer by appointment at the privately-operated Millbrook Lakes.
The Wallace Hotel offers great meals and live music throughout the week and is a great place to stop for a meal.
