Frequently asked questions

What do pet registration fees pay for?

The registration fee paid by pet owners helps Council deliver a wide range of local animal management services that promote responsible pet ownership and community safety.

These services include the maintenance and operation of animal pound and shelter facilities, investigation of animal complaints, enforcement of local laws, and regular patrols to ensure compliance with registration and control requirements. The fees also support community education programs and the implementation of Council’s Domestic Animal Management Plan, which aims to improve animal welfare and public safety outcomes within the municipality.

As part of this process, Council is also required to remit a State Government levy of $4.51 for each registered animal. This levy is set by the State Government and contributes to the administration of the Domestic Animals Act 1994, as well as funding statewide programs that promote responsible pet ownership, animal welfare initiatives, and the management of domestic animal issues across Victoria.
