Food Organics and Garden Organics (FOGO) service coming to Moorabool Shire

It's almost time to FO-GO!

From 1 July 2027, residents in Moorabool Shire's Urban and Neighbourhood Planning Zones will receive a new mandatory Food and Garden Organics (FOGO) service as part of the Victorian Government's statewide waste and recycling reforms.

The new service will provide a convenient way to reduce organic material being sent to landfill and improve resource recovery across Victoria. The bright, green-lidded FOGO bin will allow residents to recycle food scraps and garden clippings, turning them into nutrient rich compost.

What's included?

  • A 240L green-lidded FOGO bin
  • A 7L kitchen caddy for collecting food scraps in the kitchen
  • Information to help you get started

Bins will be delivered between April and June 2027. If you already have a green waste bin - from 1 July 2027 you will be able to start adding food scraps.

What should I put in my FOGO bin?

Your FOGO bin will accept:

  • Fruit and vegetable peelings
  • Leftover or out of date food like pasta, rice, bread, dairy
  • Eggshells
  • Meat and bones
  • Grass clippings
  • Flowers, leaves and garden pruning

 

What can't I put in my FOGO bin?

  • Plastic, including biodegradable or non-certified compostable plastics
  • Coffee pods
  • Tea bags
  • Kitty litter
  • Animal droppings
  • Large branches
  • Tree stumps
  • Liquids
  • Nappies
  • Wet wipes

Where will our FOGO go?

After collection, the contents of your FOGO bin will be taken to Pinegro in Mt Wallace, where the material will be composted and recycled into a valuable soil conditioner used to improve soil health in gardens and farms across Victoria.

What areas are included in the FOGO rollout?

Moorabool Shire's Urban and Neighbourhood Planning Zone areas will receive a FOGO service. These areas include:

Urban Zones

  • Bacchus Marsh
  • Darley
  • Hopetoun Park
  • Maddingley
  • Ballan township

Neighbourhood Planning Zones

  • Gordon township

 

Collection information

Urban Zones will receive a fortnightly collection of FOGO on the alternating week of the recycling service. Garbage collections will remain weekly.

The Gordon township (Neighbourhood Planning Zone) will receive a fortnightly FOGO, garbage and recycling service with the collection days yet to be confirmed.

FOGO collections will commence from 1 July 2027.

 

What if I don't want a FOGO bin?

If you have a residential waste collection service within Moorabool Shire's Urban and Neighbourhood Planning Zones, you can't opt out.

Providing a FOGO service is mandated by the Victorian Government by 2027 and it is viewed as an essential service.

Using the FOGO service will help households:

  • Keep food scraps and garden clippings out of the general rubbish bin
  • Reduce landfill and greenhouse gas emissions
  • Turn everyday organics into nutrient-rich compost
