Use this A-Z recycling and waste guide to help you make the best decision when clearing out common items from the kitchen, garage and everywhere else in your home.

Many items can be recycled into new products, saving valuable resources, energy, and landfill space. A cost may be associated with some disposal or recycling services – contact the provider first to check.

Paint / paint tins

- Take to Ballarat or Melton Transfer Stations
- Recycle via Paintback at hardware stores

Not accepted at Moorabool Shire Transfer Stations.

Pallets

- Reuse by returning high-quality pallets to the producer (often for a cash refund)
- Repurpose by turning into garden furniture or planter boxes
- Reuse by selling or giving away
- Dispose at a Moorabool Shire Transfer Station (fees apply)

Paper

Examples include - clean/dry, newspapers, office paper, paper bags - remove staples first
- Recycle in your recycling bin (yellow lid) or take to a Moorabool Shire Transfer Station
- Reuse the blank side of office paper to create a notebook
- Recycle by shredding and adding to your home compost bin or worm farm

Paper (shredded)

- Recycle in your home compost bin or worm farm
- Put shredded paper inside a paper bag and recycle in your recycling bin (yellow lid) or take to a Moorabool Shire Transfer Station (no cost)

Paper towels and napkins

Avoid waste by using reusable napkins and towels made of cloth

Recycle by tearing into small pieces and adding to your home compost bin
Note: If the paper is contaminated with chemicals or cleaning products, dispose in your garbage bin (red lid)

Pasta and rice

- Recycle in your Bokashi bin or green cone solar composter
- Dispose in your garbage bin (red lid) or take to a Moorabool Shire Transfer Station (fees apply)

Pharmaceutical machines (e.g. blood pressure monitors)

Recycle as e-waste at a Moorabool Shire Transfer Station (no cost)

Phone books

Recycle in your recycling bin (yellow lid) or take to a Moorabool Shire Transfer Station

Photocopiers

- Reuse by selling, swapping, or giving away. Try eBay, Gumtree or local Buy Swap Sell pages
- Recycle as e-waste at a Moorabool Shire Transfer Station (no cost)

Photograph negatives & slides

- Use for art projects
- Dispose in your garbage bin (red lid) or take to a Moorabool Shire Transfer Station (fees apply)

Photographs

Pillows

- Contact your local vet or animal shelter and ask if they accept pillows
- Dispose in your garbage bin (red lid) or take to a Moorabool Shire Transfer Station (fees apply)

Pizza boxes

- Recycle in your recycling bin (yellow lid) or take to a Moorabool Shire Transfer Station
- Remove food and if pizza box is excessively oily, put in garbage bin (red lid)

Plant pots (plastic)

- Reuse to grow seeds or re-pot new plants
- Reuse by donating to community gardens or nurseries
- Recycle in your recycling bin (yellow lid)
- Recycle at a Moorabool Shire Transfer Station

Plasterboard

Dispose of at a Moorabool Shire Transfer Station (fees apply)

Plastic bags

Avoid waste by always taking reusable bags with you

- Reuse for as long as possible
- Dispose in your garbage bin (red lid) or take to a Moorabool Shire Transfer Station (fees apply)

Plastic bottles

- Remove lids and dispose of at any Moorabool transfer station
- If numbered 1, 2 or 5 - recycle in your recycling bin (yellow lid) or take to a Moorabool Shire Transfer Station
- If numbered 3,4,6,7 dispose in your garbage bin (red lid) or take to a Moorabool Shire Transfer Station (fees apply)

Avoid waste by using a reusable bottle

Plastic containers (e.g. take away containers, yoghurt pots)

- If numbered 1, 2 or 5 - recycle in your recycling bin (yellow lid) or take to a Moorabool Shire Transfer Station
- If numbered 3,4,6,7 dispose in your garbage bin (red lid) or take to a Moorabool Shire Transfer Station (fees apply)
- Reuse to store food or craft supplies

Plastic wrappers

Avoid waste by opting for products with minimal packaging

Polystyrene / Styrofoam

- Dispose in your garbage bin (red lid) or take to a Moorabool Shire Transfer Station (fees apply)
- Avoid by taking your own reusable cup or container
- Avoid excessively packaged products and shop local rather than having items shipped

Post bags

- Reuse for sending parcels in the future
- Dispose in your garbage bin (red lid) or take to a Moorabool Shire Transfer Station (fees apply)

Pots and pans (metal)

- Reuse for plants, pet bowls, or donate to your local charity/op-shop
- Recycle at a Moorabool Shire Transfer Station (fees may apply)

Never put any electronic item in a household bin, e-waste is banned from landfill and is a contaminant in the recycling bin.

Recycle at the sorting stations at:

- Ballan Council Office, 15 Stead Street, Ballan
- Darley Council Office, 182 Halletts Way, Darley
