Works Within Municipal Road Reserves permit

Any individual, contractor, or authority that wishes to undertake works within the road reserve, must obtain a Works Within Municipal Road Reserves permit.  

The road reserve is outlined as extending from both property boundaries and includes the road pavement, kerb and channel, nature strip and footpath. If you are planning on doing any works you must apply for a permit.

The purpose for undertaking works might be: 

Road opening

You are required to apply for a permit if you will be conducting any of the following:

  • excavating or breaking up the surface of the road reserve
  • removing or interfering with a structure on the road reserve
  • planting or removing a tree or other vegetation
  • boring under a road reserve
  • road construction
  • installing drains, pipes, cables, building shelters etc. on a road reserve
  • constructing a footpath

Occupy Part of a Roadway

You are required to apply for a permit if you will be conducting any of the following:

  • erecting a structure on, in or over a road
  • erecting or placing an obstruction on a road reserve

Public Minor Works

This form must be used by: 

 - Utilities and their agents

 - Road Authorities and their agents

 - In all cases where the works that are proposed to be undertaken require an application for consent. 

You are required to submit all necessary documents with the application form. Failure to do so, will result in delaying the processing time of the permit. Standard drawings should be attached to the permit relevant to the type of works completed.

Private works

This form must be used by contractors and individuals who wish to undertake works of a minor nature.

These works must not disrupt both traffic and pedestrian movement or create a risk at locations on municipal roads.

You are required to submit all necessary documents with the application form. Standard drawings should be attached to the permit relevant to the type of works completed.

Failure to do so will result in delaying the processing time of the permit.

Fees vary depending on the type of work being conducted and the speed of the road.

What happens next?

Processing of the application form can take up to 10 business days from the date of submission. If the application is required to be referred to other internal departments, this will delay the time to receive the permit. If such referrals are required, the applicant will be notified.
