When Moorabool residents who are employed locally set off for work, their destinations range from farms and family businesses to construction sites, manufacturing businesses and mines.
The Shire boasts nearly 1,400 businesses, almost half of them in Bacchus Marsh.
Agriculture is, not surprisingly, one of Moorabool Shire’s most important industries.
Employing more than 750 people, its 480 farm businesses bring about $60 million in farm gate value to the Shire every year. The Shire’s handy location to markets in Melbourne and Ballarat, and to export points such as Melbourne Airport and the ports of Melbourne and Geelong, offers a myriad of opportunities for value-added manufacturing in key products such as fruit, vegetables, milk, wool and meat.
Manufacturing is Moorabool’s growth industry. At present it comprises about 60 manufacturing businesses, mainly in the sectors of machinery and equipment (21% of total manufacturing businesses), metal products (15%), food and beverages (12%). Nearly three-quarters of the Shire’s manufacturing businesses are based in Bacchus Marsh.
The construction industry in Moorabool is vibrant and growing. Employing about 350 people, the industry at present earns about $40 million a year.
