Fees waived for roadside grazing

Council is reminding landowners they can apply for permits to graze livestock on roadsides with permit fees waived during current dry conditions.

With parts of the shire experiencing drought-like conditions, this practical support option will help ease the pressure on feed supply for local farmers. The permits allow livestock to graze approved roadside areas, provided key safety and compliance measures are met.

Mayor Cr Paul Tatchell said the initiative is a proactive way to support local landowners while maintaining public safety.

“We understand how tough things are on the land right now. Waiving this fee makes it easier for farmers to access additional grazing space during these conditions, while ensuring the community and our roads remain safe,” Cr Tatchell said.

“We’re doing what we can to be flexible and we encourage landowners to apply and to speak to us about their needs.”

What permit holders must do:

• Install stock-proof fencing (generally 3 metres from the road edge — flexibility may be possible case by case)

• Display “Stock Ahead” warning signage

• Supervise livestock and return them to the property by dusk

• Remove infrastructure after grazing concludes (fencing can remain for the permit duration)

• Provide $10 million Public Liability Insurance

Council also emphasised that any fencing — including electric — must have appropriate signage and not use steel posts.

How to apply:

  1. Download the application form via moorabool.vic.gov.au
  2. Supply a basic plan and proof of insurance
  3. Submit via email, post, or in person
  4. Council will assess the application and waive the permit fee during drought conditions
