EPA needs to clean up toxic waste on property
Trailers full of toxic industrial waste on a Crown road reserve in Merrimu have been disposed of but calls to the Environment Protection Authority (EPA) to pay the bill continue to fall on deaf ears.
Mayor, Cr Paul Tatchell said while the trailers had been removed, there were still unsecured industrial waste cylinders inside the property that are the responsibility of the EPA to remove.
“Our message to the EPA - who are ignoring us - is that we have done our bit, even though we should never have had to pay to remove waste the EPA was monitoring for years without action,” Cr Tatchell said.
“We now fully expect the EPA to act on the industrial waste that is inside the property boundary – they know it’s there and is as dangerous as the waste that was outside the property!”
The cost to Moorabool Shire ratepayers to remove the toxic waste was around half a million dollars.
