Philosophy in the Library - Philosophers and Christmas

Next date: Saturday, 05 December 2026 | 10:00 AM to 01:00 PM

What can Christmas make us think about?

Christmas can mean many different things: family, faith, generosity, memory, childhood, obligation, grief, hope, consumption, rest, community, and the strange annual pressure to feel joyful on schedule. For some people, it is sacred. For others, it is cultural, complicated, commercial, exhausting, beautiful — or all of these at once.

In this Bacchus Marsh Philosophy Club session, we’ll ask:

  • What does Christmas reveal about what we value?
  • Together, we’ll explore questions such as:
  • What is the meaning of giving?
  • Do rituals help us live better lives?
  • Can generosity become an obligation?
  • What do family traditions give us — and what can they demand of us?
  • Has Christmas become too commercial, or has it always carried many meanings?

As always, no prior knowledge of philosophy is needed. The session will be friendly, structured, and discussion-based. We are not here to win the argument — we are here to explore the question together.

Come along if you enjoy good questions, thoughtful conversation, and hearing how other people see the world.
