Have you been meaning to have your dog or cat microchipped but haven't got around to it yet?

Moorabool Shire Council is hosting a microchipping day for dogs and cats 12 weeks and over in the shire where you can have your animal microchipped by our trained and friendly Community Safety officers for a reduced fee.

Bookings can be made through the below link. Council will attempt to accommodate walk-in microchipping, but extended wait times may apply.

Please note: All dogs in attendance will need to remain on a leash. If required, they must also be muzzled. All cats must remain in a cat carrier.

Frequently asked questions

Why should I make a booking?

To have your dog or cat microchipped on the day, you will first need to register for a Source Number through the Pet Exchange Register. You will then need to provide the Source Number when having your pet microchipped. Making a booking ensures that we can provide you with the information to ensure you have secured your Source number prior to the day.

A Source Number is a requirement when implanting a microchip in a dog or cat born after 1 July 2020. More information is available online at Pet Exchange Register

Why is Council offering reduced fee microchipping?

This discounted microchipping day supports the goals of Council’s Domestic Animal Management Plan 2026–2029 by encouraging responsible pet ownership and helping residents meet their legal obligations. By making microchipping more accessible, Council is improving the safety, identification and welfare of pets across the community.

How much does microchipping usually cost?

The microchipping will cost $20 on the day, reduced from Council's regular fee of $38.20. Microchipping through a local vet can be significantly more expensive.

Who will be doing the micochipping?

While many councils do not offer this service and require residents to have microchipping completed by a vet, Council has two Community Safety Officers who are authorised implanters and will perform all microchips on the day.

What if I can't get to Darley on the day?

Council is aiming to deliver additional reduced cost microchipping days across the shire, based on the uptake of this event.

Can I have more than one cat or dog microchipped on the day?

Yes! If you have more than one cat or dog that has not been microchipped, they each can each be microchipped at the reduced rate, as long as they are 12 weeks or older.

What if my dog or cat can be aggressive?

All dogs must be on a leash and muzzled if required. Cats must be contained within cat carriers.

Our Community Safety Officers are trained to manage animals with a range of temperaments, however, if you dog is known to be aggressive, dangerous or cannot be around large amounts of people or other animals, this event may not be suitable for them to attend.

Can I have my other pets microchipped?

While it is advisable to microchip all pets, this microchipping day is for dogs and cats only.
