Moorabool Ready

Preparing Pets, Livestock & Landholders for Emergencies

Council has received funding to deliver a community resilience and engagement program during 2027 and 2028.

This funding is provided by the CFA through the Strengthening Local Government Partnerships Safer Together program.

Our friendly team will visit communities across the shire to speak with residents and landholders about property insurance, agricultural recovery planning, and practical ways to prepare pets and livestock for emergencies, particularly bushfire.

Events and opportunities to connect with the team will be shared on this page.

What is the project?

The project is aimed at engaging communities to build resilience in emergencies through planning and preparation in areas that are not commonly approached, such as insurance, farming and planning for animals. In order to achieve this Moorabool have employed an Emergency Engagement and Resilience Officer to interact and gather information from the community to inform and facilitate the sessions around these topics.

The Emergency Engagement and Resilience Officer will work alongside residents to raise awareness of how they can be affected in a emergency in order to help build resilience in themselves and their properties if a fire was to occur. The sharing of information regarding insurance, farming and planning for animals will help support the residents and farmers and to improve preparedness if the worst was to occur.

Why are we undertaking this project?

During recent events throughout Victoria the issues around underinsurance, particularly in farming areas, has highlighted that there are gaps in the understanding of insurance amongst the community and education in this area is vital to ensure effective recovery.

Other important areas for the Moorabool community that have been identified include agricultural recovery and how key elements around plants, crops, pasture and water and fencing needs to be included in plans to ensure strengthened resilience when a bushfire or an emergency occurs.

Further the planning for animals, in both rural (agricultural) and townships (pets) is imperative as often residents evacuate with their animals, who offer companionship and are, for some, their livelihoods. This information sharing initiative will be structured to work within the community to provide support and link into the expert advice that is available as appropriate.
