Trail overview
Starting at Ramsay Crescent in Darley, the trail winds its way up Bald Hill, offering a moderately challenging climb with an elevation gain of around 300 meters. Spanning over 1000 steps and approximately 1.9 km one-way, it typically takes 30 minutes to an hour to complete, depending on your pace
The 1000+ Steps
Along the way, you'll find rest stops, benches, and a water fountain at the halfway point that is perfect for a quick refresh before deciding whether to continue to the summit or wrap up your walk there. Step markers every 100 steps help track your progress and keep motivation high. The trail is dog-friendly (on leash), though it's wise to stay alert for snakes during warmer months.
Summit All Abilities Sculpture Trail
The All-Abilities Trail at the Summit ensures everyone can enjoy the beauty of Bald Hill. With a gentler gradient, smoother surfaces, and wider paths, it's ideal for prams, wheelchairs, and those with limited mobility. Viewing points offer stunning panoramic vistas, while sculptures along the trail add a creative and cultural touch. Accessible via Swans Road, the trail features parking spaces, toilet facilities, rest areas, and interpretive signage, making it a welcoming and inclusive destination for all.
Sculptures
The All Abilities Sculpture Trail features temporary and permanent artworks installed at points along the walk.
Atop Bald Hill, James Voller’s artwork Changing Lands, 2025, speaks to the transformation of place; how industry, population growth, and agriculture continue to shape the region. By incorporating a photographic image into the form of the sculpture, an illusionary overlay interacts with the sky above, inviting viewers to reflect on the layered history and future potential of Moorabool Shire.
Cara Johnson’s Grey box I–V, 2025, comprises five artworks, a mix of permanent and temporary, which invite audiences to consider the presence and absence of the Grey box, a tree native to Bald Hill. They include the reintroduction of live trees and native plants – naturally occurring grasses, groundcovers and saltbushes – while the sculptures provide pooling rainwater, perches and shade for wildlife.
