Moorabool Shire Council is aware of recent announcements by Ausnet of investment in local government and not-for-profit organisation projects in communities impacted by the proposed Western Renewables Link (WRL).
Mayor, Cr Paul Tatchell, said the investments had raised some concerns with Moorabool Shire residents, particularly those opposed to the WRL project.
“We have not had any discussions with Ausnet about its community benefits program, or made any commitments,” Cr Tatchell said.
“We have always supported our community members who have been impacted by this project and we are committed to continuing to consult with and act in the best interests of the shire going forward.”
The proposed WRL project involves establishment of 190kms of high voltage transmission lines across several shires including Moorabool which will allow renewable energy generated in western Victoria to Melbourne. An Environmental Effects Statement on the project is expected to be released for public comment in coming months.
“Any involvement in a community benefits program right now might give the impression Council is pre-empting the outcome of the WRL process,” Cr Tatchell said.
“My clear message is, we are supporting our community and Moorabool is not for sale.”
