Kathy Holowko is a Blackwood-based artist who regularly explores ecological themes in her art practice. Caring for our patch is a hand-painted artwork created to illustrate the effect of weeds on the local environment, on behalf of the Blackwood & Barry’s Reef Landcare Group. Three dimensional sets were created by cutting out each illustration and layering them to depict various scenes around the Wombat and Lerderderg forests.
Trentham photographer Daniel Wiliams then filmed, photographed and animated them, with still images from the project being displayed in all 14 of the MAPP gallery windows in Bacchus Marsh and Ballan. The animation of Caring for our patch is viewable online, with Daniel’s son Zander providing a voiceover narration.
Caring for our patch is an engaging way to help communicate the importance of keeping weeds under control in a catchment area. The project was supported by Melbourne Water, which aims to prevent problem weeds from travelling downstream into new environments.
