Cheryl Schmidt

At 75, following the loss of her husband, this mother of three, grandmother of five, and great-grandmother of three discovered an unexpected new chapter in powerlifting. Struggling with everyday tasks like hanging doona covers and getting up from the floor, she joined a gym and began working with a personal trainer. Within three months of attempting her first deadlift—which initially made her laugh—she competed in her first powerlifting competition and won a World Title. Now holding five World titles and two National Championship appearances, she's also been featured on radio and promotional materials. Beyond her remarkable athletic achievements, she's a former personal carer who finds equal joy in weekly art classes in Bacchus Marsh, where her natural talent has surprised even herself, with five paintings adorning her walls and others purchased for display in professional practices—proof that life's most fulfilling journeys can begin at any age.
