The future is exciting for Moorabool

Set amid picturesque rolling hills only 45 minutes west of Melbourne CBD, Moorabool Shire combines country living with easy access to the city. An attractive mix of open spaces, friendly towns, orchards, deep gorges and forests. One of Moorabool's greatest attractions is its diversity.

Straddling the Western Freeway in the heart of an important agricultural region, the 2110 square kilometre Shire is a commuter settlement, popular tourist destination and centre of a large agricultural industry.

Economic Development

Moorabool’s location and population growth are its major strengths. It is central to Melbourne, Ballarat and Geelong and its residents have numerous choices about where they can work, shop and recreate within the Shire’s extensive offering. Bacchus Marsh (the major urban centre), and the other towns across the Shire, offer a range of lifestyle opportunities.

As a business and industry address, Moorabool is central to the main western transport corridor that runs between Melbourne and Adelaide and is served by the Ballarat-Melbourne commuter train.

It has skilled labour supply and is readily accessible to the major industrial and population centres in the west of Melbourne as well as sea and air ports.

In 2024, our population of almost 40,000 will support a variety of new jobs, services and industries. The diversity of our economy, from agriculture through to professional services, will underpin our economic resilience. We will embrace our inter-dependence with the Melbourne and Ballarat economies while sustaining our unique local lifestyle.

  • Food production and processing
  • Professional and business services
  • Health services
  • Retail
  • Tourism
  • Construction, and
  • Education.

Precincts to Support Economic Growth

Moorabool’s focus is on the development of concentrated areas of economic activity to support retail, industrial, agricultural and value added agricultural businesses. The priority precinct areas identified for sustainable investment are:

  • Parwan Employment Precinct – New opportunities within an integrated agribusiness precinct located on the doorstep of Geelong and Melbourne.
  • Bacchus Marsh Town Centre – Accommodaing the largest concentration of new jobs with growth in retailing, health services and office activities.
  • Ballan Town Centre – A location for investment by 'tree-change' professionals, tourism retailers and health service providers.
