Free HPV Vaccine Catchup Program for young people in Moorabool Shire

Published on 19 September 2022

Moorabool Shire Council is holding a Human Papillomavirus (HPV) Vaccine Catchup Program for all students between the age of 12 to 18 who may have missed the Gardasil 9 course or part of the course in year 7.

Two vaccination sessions will be held directly in local schools, and two sessions are open for the public. Bookings are essential for these sessions.

HPV is a common virus that is spread through sexual contact. HPV infection can be serious. It can cause cancers, including cancer of the cervix, vulva, vagina, penis and anus, and some head and neck cancers.

The Gardasil 9 vaccine is for everyone, regardless of gender. By getting vaccinated against HPV, you are not only protecting yourself you can also help protect other people. The more people who are vaccinated in your community, the less the disease will spread.

The best time to be immunised against HPV is before you become sexually active. People who have had sexual contact may have been infected with some types of HPV already. If you have already been infected with any of the HPV types included in the HPV vaccine, the vaccine will not protect you against HPV-related cancers and disease caused by that HPV type. You will however be protected against the other types contained in the vaccine.

There are 9 types covered in the vaccine provided, including the four strains most likely to cause severe disease.

Vaccination sessions will be held:

  • Thursday 6 October 2022 at Bacchus Marsh Secondary College (Bacchus Marsh College Students Only)
  • Thursday 13 October 2022 at Bacchus Marsh Grammar (Bacchus Marsh Grammar Students Only)
  • Saturday 8 October 2022, 10am – 2pm at Darley Civic Hub Pavilion, 182 Halletts Way Darley (Bookings are essential)
