BacchChat: Our threatened native grasslands
BacchChat is a free community presentation, providing opportunities for our community to learn, grow and engage with varied topics. BacchChat is held on the first Saturday of each month (excluding January).
Native grasslands are home to a rich diversity of plants and animals. In this workshop, you will learn about the ecology, restoration and history of native grasslands from three experts in the field.
Assoc. Prof John Morgan: Plant Ecologist, La Trobe University, will present:
What is in my native grassland? Why?
Learn about the diversity and distribution of plant species in native grasslands, and the factors that influence their composition and structure.
How do we get species back into grasslands?
Discover the challenges and opportunities for restoring native grasslands.
Ben Courtice: Botanist, will present:
Working in Native Grassland, grassland restoration.
Hear about the practical aspects of working in native grasslands, and the skills and knowledge required for successful restoration projects.
Bob Reid will present:
“Eyewitness”, an historic view of our Grasslands.
Explore the history and culture of native grasslands, and how they have changed over time.
About Associate Professor John Morgan:
Associate Professor John Morgan is Victoria’s leading expert on Australian native grasslands. He is a plant ecologist who specialises in understanding how disturbance, such as fire and grazing regimes, determines the dynamics of native plant communities over the long-term in south-east Australia.
He has worked for more than 20 years in the threatened grassy ecosystems of southern Australia. His research is concentrated on understanding the long-term changes that occur in species composition in the context of climate change, land-use change, ecological management and plant invasions. He works to relate this to the conservation of biodiversity.
