16 Days of Activism - Community Quilt Launch
It has been so wonderful to see the Moorabool community come together and contribute to the Moorabool Shire Council Community Quilt Against Gender-Based Violence. This community arts project is in support of the upcoming United Nations international campaign, 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence 2022, Respect Women: ‘Call it Out’. The 16 Days runs from November 26 to December 10, International Human Rights Day.
Local artist, craftivist, and academic Lauren Matthews has led the community arts component of the project and has facilitated a forum connecting local community organisations along with seven drop-in stitching sessions, bringing women and non-binary people together in diverse community spaces to work on the community quilt and document what respect is to them. These sessions have been about more than the quilt, they have built connections and provided a place to come together, create, share stories, and explore how art, craft and activism can work together to create change in local communities. This is something women have been doing for centuries.
Come along to the launch of the Moorabool Shire Council Community Quilt Against Gender-Based Violence on Saturday 10 December, International Human Rights Day, the final day of the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence 2022, Respect Women: ‘Call it Out’. The Quilt will be part of the Moorabool Shire Council art collection and displayed across the Shire.
It has been wonderful to see the Moorabool community come together and contribute to the quilt, discussing what respect is. This morning tea will see the unveiling of the community quilt and all project contributors and interested community members are invited to attend. There will be entertainment and interesting discussion about the project and why the 16 Days of Activism are so important.
The event will be held on Saturday December 10 from10.30am - 12.00pm at the Lerderderg Library, 215 Main Street, Bacchus Marsh
